The idea for The Strock™ was borne entirely out of necessity when my dog, Buddy, hurt one of his front paws.  It wasn’t a serious injury that required any bandaging, but he immediately began licking it and causing irritation to the small wound.  I knew that if I didn’t stop him from doing this, it would become an infected wound that would then require medical attention.  Since he stays home alone during the day, I had to come up with a way to prevent him from bothering just one paw but didn’t want to use the restrictive E-collar (the “lamp shade”) that I have from the veterinarian.  Those collars are very awkward and restrictive for pets, although they still serve a purpose for body injuries. 

Therefore, I came up with the idea of sewing a single sock into Buddy's sweater that would cover his one leg.  And although that was working great, I thought about using something in the warmer months when he wouldn’t be wearing a sweater.  So I expanded upon my idea and sewed the sock into a piece of elastic. 

At the same time, I saw the commercial for the auditions for the show on ABC called The American Inventor and took my invention and tried out.  I made it into the second round and realized at that point that I had created a product much needed in the animal care industry. 

However, upon discussing it with Buddy’s veterinarian, it was pointed out to me that something waterproof would probably be more practical.  Therefore, I went “back to the drawing board” and revised the design to be a waterproof foot and leg cover with absorbent cotton lining which would aid in the healing of any injuries to legs on animals that normally would’ve been prescribed the restrictive E-collar as part of their healing regiment. 

Once the design was perfected to its current model and shown to veterinarians, it became quickly apparent that not only is this product needed on the market, but veterinarians have been waiting for just such a product to be developed in order to discontinue the use of the restrictive E-collars for foot and leg injuries.
